What Are You Waiting For?

Advent teaches us the beauty of waiting—what’s God preparing for you this season?

As I was putting my four-year-old to bed and reading Oh! The Places You’ll Go! for the 32nd time in a row, we got to the part where Dr. Seuss describes “The Waiting Place”, a dreary, stagnant limbo where people just exist, waiting for things to happen. I felt a tug on my heart, because those words felt familiar. Too familiar. I considered how this Fall, running my business felt an awful lot like The Waiting Place.

In full transparency, the last five months have felt like limbo in my business. It’s been a season of feeling like I was spinning my wheels, waiting for results to show up, or clients to call, or waiting to see any progress at all. I’ve been waiting to see the fruits of the labor I felt so called to be doing. I have felt frustrated, restless, and honestly wondered sometimes if the dry spell was a punishment for not having enough faith in God to provide.

BUT. Then I considered the new season we’re in — Advent. And I realized that maybe this waiting wasn’t a punishment — maybe it was preparation.

Dr. Suess’ “Waiting Place,” makes waiting sound frustrating and helpless. Thank goodness that’s not the only kind of waiting we know! As Catholics, Advent teaches us that waiting can actually be beautiful. In Advent, waiting isn’t passive or stagnant; it’s active, hopeful, and intentional. There’s a movement to our waiting, an undercurrent of excitement. We wait with expectation for the greatest gift of all: Jesus Christ.

What if we brought that same Advent perspective into our businesses?

The Beauty of Advent Waiting in Your Business

Advent waiting isn’t about twiddling our thumbs or sitting in frustration. It’s about preparing our hearts and creating space for what’s to come. In the same way, we can approach waiting in our businesses with eager expectation, asking God to reveal what He has in store for us.

Here are three ways to bring Advent waiting into your business this season:

1. Name Your Desires

What are you waiting for God to do in your business? Spend 15 minutes of quiet time reflecting on your goals, dreams, and struggles. Write them down and bring them to prayer, asking God what He wants to show you.

• What do you hope 2025 will bring?

• Where are you feeling called to grow?

• What areas of your business feel uncertain or out of your control?

When we name our desires, we invite God into those spaces. Advent is a season of trusting that He hears our prayers and is at work, even in the waiting.

2. Ask: What Is God Waiting for YOU to Do?

While we’re waiting on God, it’s easy to overlook that He may be waiting for us, too. There may be something important that we’ve been putting off, perhaps out of fear or avoidance. Is it launching a new product or service? Or perhaps it’s having a hard conversation with a team member or client, or delegating tasks you’ve been holding on to? Ask yourself what fear or doubt is holding me back from taking this step?

• Is there a step of faith He’s calling you to take in your business?

• Are you holding back on a decision, project, or idea because it feels too big or risky?

• What would trusting God more fully look like in your day-to-day work?

Sometimes, the blessings we’re waiting for require action on our part. Advent reminds us to prepare the way for the Lord—in our lives, our hearts, and yes, even our businesses.

3. Prepare Your Audience

Just as we prepare our hearts for Christ, we’re called to prepare and serve the people God has entrusted to us. How could God be calling you to serve your audience better? Spend an hour brainstorming what you want your clients to walk away with after working with you in 2025, and how you want them to feel.

Ask yourself:

• What does my audience need from me right now?

• What do they need to feel hopeful, inspired, or supported in the coming year?

• How can I create space to better serve them in 2025?

Advent isn’t just about waiting; it’s about readiness. By reflecting on what your audience needs, you can create offerings, content, or strategies that align with God’s plans for your business.

Final Reflection

As Advent leads into Christmas, it also brings us closer to a new year. This season of hope and preparation is the perfect time to reflect on where you’ve been, where you’re going, and how God is leading you forward. Waiting isn’t wasted—it’s where God does some of His best work in us. Let this Advent be a time of joyful anticipation for all He has in store for you, your business, and the people you’re called to serve.

So, I’ll ask you again: What are you waiting for?

Spend time in prayer this week, asking God to reveal His plans for your business. Take steps to name your desires, discern what He’s asking of you, and prepare the way for the blessings He’s waiting to bring.
