Cotton Capers

Cotton Capers has been a staple in the Midtown area of Mobile, AL for over 40 years. Offering a broad selection of designer fabrics for home decor, as well as custom upholstery and drapery, they have become a beloved part of the creative landscape for many makers and interior designers on both sides of the bay.Ownership recently changed hands, and the new owner wanted an updated logo to breathe new life into the store.

Client: Cotton Capers

Scope: Visual Identity

Overview

The store's new owner, Amy Kennemer, originally reached out for a logo, but after seeing the benefits of a fully-developed visual identity to establish her brand's personality with a new generation of fabric lovers, she signed on for a full brand strategy and visual identity, to give her a robust toolkit to promote her store across the customer access points of today.

Challenge

The fabric stores' new identity needed to communicate that though the ownership is new, the traditions and excellent customer service the community has come to love still remains. The brand needs to resonate with makers and interior designers in their 30s-50s, most of whom are now familiar with both social media and traditional print avenues, and it needed to communicate the sophistication and elegance for which Cotton Capers has come to be known. Further, the owner wanted to stay true to the cotton boll featured in the original logo, but feature it in a more modern way.

Solution

For the logo, we wanted to communicate a more modern take on the cotton boll icon, which we wanted to keep for its brand equity and its ties to the fabric world. We crafted an abstract cotton boll out of the repeated letter “C” from the word Cotton, which creates a unique brandmark that can be used to identify your brand in the wild. We crafted the lettering to have contrast between the thinnest and thickets parts of each letter, which gives it a more luxury, up-scale feel, which is a departure from the bold, playful font used in the previous logo.

For the tagline, we developed “luxury fabrics for the modern home." a succinct but relatable description of what the store has to offer. The brand icons were developed from various aspects of the logo, as well as by combining hand-drawn elements from nature and organic rings. We’ve also created a stylized version of a cotton boll branch, featuring the logomark cotton shape. And naturally, since this is a fabric store, we created a variety of brand patterns resembling upscale fabric that the brand can lean on to represent its personality in social media posts, on packaging, and across other customer touch-points, specifically designed to provide visual interest and catch the attention of crafty women, interior designers, and homeowners in the Mobile area.

After a successful grand opening, Cotton Capers is moving forward with their new branding and is ready to serve Mobile, AL with a new energy!
